## What the standard is

ISO/IEC 27028, Edition 1, guidance on using information security control attributes. Stage 60.00, under publication, dated 20 October 2026. ISO states final production steps of up to seven weeks, which puts the latest expected publication date at 8 December 2026; that is our arithmetic, not an announced date.

## The five attributes

- Control type: Preventive, Detective, Corrective. What the control does to the chance or the effect of an incident.
- Information security properties: Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability. Which characteristic of information the control helps to preserve.
- Cybersecurity concepts: Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, Recover. Which function of the cybersecurity framework the control serves.
- Operational capabilities: Governance, Asset management, Information protection, Human resource security, Physical security, System and network security, Application security, Secure configuration, Identity and access management, Threat and vulnerability management, Continuity, Supplier relationships security, Legal and compliance, Information security event management, Information security assurance. The operational area a practitioner would place the control in.
- Security domains: Governance and ecosystem, Protection, Defence, Resilience. The broad security domain the control belongs to.
